Students in a classroom in Kenya now have light so they can study in the evenings for their national exams. No one is happier for them or more proud than a group of Foothill High School students who built Solar Suitcase #660 to provide light at Emalindi Primary School in Khwisero District, Kakamega County, an extremely rural area about a 7-mile drive from Nairobi.

Congratulations to our very own Jackie White! The Sacramento Arts & Business Council (Sac ABC) named her as Arts Educator of the Year at their annual Interlude to the Season, an award reception that celebrates the arts in the Sacramento region.

White serves as Director of the Arts and Career Education Department in Twin Rivers, where she has been instrumental in expanding visual and performing arts throughout the school district, including:

  • Integrating the arts in every K-12 classroom
  • Hiring 21 full time art teachers
  • Establishing a residency program that provides direct contact with teaching artists for all 5th grade students
  • Increasing the number of schools served by the Link Up art program

The Arts Educator of the Year award was one of 12 given at the Jan. 25 arts gala event by Sac ABC. Founded in 1987, the organization celebrates companies, organizations and individuals who have made meaningful contributions to support the region's arts and cultural assets.

In an effort to generate additional revenue, Twin Rivers Unified School District (TRUSD) is looking at how to better utilize many of its assets. To facilitate this process, the District is forming what is referred to as a "7-11 Committee." If you are qualified and would like to participate, we invite you to apply to be a member of the Committee.

The purpose of the committee is to review and analyze real property that is owned by TRUSD and to determine what real property could be designated as "excess" or "surplus" because it will not be needed for school purposes. The committee will then present a report to the Board of Trustees recommending uses for the surplus property or how to dispose of the property (e.g., sale, lease, etc.).

Three yellow buses rolled through Twin Rivers just before the winter break, loaded with boxes of food and wrapped gifts for 20 families in need. Also on board were Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with other volunteers from the Twin Rivers central office.

“Thank you TRUSD for the love ... we are so grateful and humbled by the gifts,” responded student Nani Poloai. “Maybe there really is a Santa Claus after all.”

The volunteers started their day at the Sacramento Food Bank where they picked up donations of fresh fruits and vegetables. Before deliveries began, the buses stopped by the district office to collect gifts for all members of the families that were on the routes.

The gifts were donated and wrapped by central office volunteers.

The Twin Rivers Unified School District Police Department and local law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring social media in light of a recent wave of posts locally and nationwide warning that clowns may show up at schools threatening to do harm.

Today we were informed of posts mentioning our district. Posting threats toward a public school is a felony offense, and we do not take these threats lightly. Twin Rivers officers are actively patrolling all school sites as a precautionary measure.

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. In the event of any suspicious activity in or around our schools, please contact the TRUSD Police Department at (916) 566-2777.

Thank you for your continued support of Twin Rivers schools.

In our efforts to keep parents informed, we wanted to let you know that students in grades 7-8 will be using supplemental instructional materials through the News ELA (English Language Arts) program.

The News ELA program provides teachers with access to current event articles like those found in state and national newspapers.

The goal is to bring relevance to core curriculum and to provide students with access to a large quantity of material that matches their reading level and interest levels. Teachers are able to adjust the complexity of the text for struggling readers.

Please contact your principal if you have questions about the News ELA program and/or it resources.

With the passage of Senate Bill 172, many students who were unable to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) can now receive their diploma.

As far back as 2006, when the exit exam became a requirement for graduation, students who didn’t pass the CAHSEE were not able to graduate and receive their diploma. SB 172 changes that. Any former student who completed grade twelve in the 2003-04 school year—or a subsequent school year—and met all applicable graduation requirements other than the passage of the CAHSEE may contact their high school office and fill out a request for records review.

Once the graduation status is verified, the records office will mail out the diploma to the individual’s current mailing address.
